The Mercer Williams House is an 1860 Italianate mansion on Monterey Square that became internationally known as the setting of John Berendt's 1994 bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Built for Confederate General Hugh W. Mercer (great-grandfather of songwriter Johnny Mercer), the house was later owned by the charismatic antiques dealer Jim Williams. Today it operates as a museum with guided tours of the beautifully restored interior and its remarkable collection of antiques and fine art.
